My name is Joshua Jacobs, and since 2016 I've been performing and teaching as Slinky Josh.
One of the questions I'm most often asked is, "How did you discover this was possible?"
In January of 2015, I was innocently scrolling through Facebook when I happened upon the following viral video, of a man whose name I would later learn to be Wu WuQiang:
Like everyone who watched that video, I had never seen anything like it before in my life. It was psychedelic, it was magical, it seemed to defy the laws of physics. I briefly questioned if what I was seeing might be the work of some clever Hollywood CGI artist.
I knew that this was the next big thing. I had to figure out how to do it.
I quickly went on Amazon and paid $15 for the "magic spring" that looked most similar to the one being used in that video. (As it turns out, "Slinky" is a registered trademark of Alex Brands, the company that bought it from the children of the inventor of the Slinky, Richard James.)
When it came in the mail, I eagerly opened it, played with it for a few minutes... and then set it on my shelf and forgot about it. It seemed too rigid, and I couldn't figure out how to even begin to make it move like the one in the video.
A few months later, I was strolling through the local grocery store when I had a thought to check the toy section. Lo and behold, they had a magic spring of very different dimensions to the one I had purchased on Amazon, so I bought it. It seemed more floppy and flexy, more... slinky.
A few days later, I left for Sonic Bloom, Colorado's big electronic music camping festival. I brought the spring with me.
On Saturday night of the festival, I started playing with the spring. I had a whole night ahead of me with nothing to do but enjoy myself and dance, so I took it with me. I discovered it fit perfectly on my wrist.
I stayed up all night dancing, exploring the festival, and playing with the spring. By 6 AM, I had a very tenuous grasp on the tricks I now refer to as the "hand-to-hand transfer," and the "escalator."
But that was enough.
I could see the potential of the spring, and I now had proof that I could figure out its magic if I just practiced enough.
That was three years ago.
Since then I've tried as many different shapes and sizes of springs I could get my hands on, trying to find the ideal size for doing tricks. Some were too flimsy - not enough tension in the coils. Some were too small or too big to do the tricks I wanted to do with them.
Finally, I found a bulk supplier for the same exact magic spring used in the original video that inspired me to start this journey in the first place. Now I can offer them to you at the most affordable rate available, so that everyone can learn this magical new art.
Going forward, I aim to be the premier supplier for magic springs in the United States and beyond.
I'll be adding different sizes and varieties as time goes on, so be sure to subscribe to my email list to stay updated!
